Stockholm Tap Festival

Mar 2, 2016

The 7th annual Stockholm Tap Festival is taking place March 23rd to 29th 2016.

With an average of 250 students coming from all over the world (30-35 countries represented!), mainly from Europe, this event is a highlight for every young tap dancer on the Old Continent that can enjoy classes with the best tap dancers and teachers of the world, a wide range of after-classes events (All Style Battle, tap talks, cuttin' contest, jam sessions, shows...) and an amazing vibe, put in place thanks to the commitment of the founders of the festival, Larsa Jemt, Andrew Liebmann and Jonas Nermyr.

Everything is set up for dancers to have the best time balancing tap dance, fun and financial accessibility : free housing, student/youth discounts, some morning classes taught by young dancers attending the festival as students, a chef cooking for the festival, a cosy bar/café where everyone meet and chat between classes and, of course, parties and events ending in the early morning, a few hours before the classes. As Jonas Nermyr says himself: "A festival is so much more than just classes. In Stockholm we have a lot of activities outside of the classrooms, creating an atmosphere of joy, fun and socialazing. And some crazy parties too! Of course classes are the most important, and that is our focus. We offer the best classes with the best teachers in the world. And for us, it is very important to have a good mix of styles etc, in the faculty." (Stockholm Tap Festival is offering flamenco, music, swing dance and street dance classes among others).

Unfortunately, as it is often the case in tap dance, funds are hard to get and the organizers wish they could do more to develop the art form in Sweden and abroad thanks to the festival: "It would be great if we could expand the performing opportunities, both for the teachers and other participants. Or even being able to invite dancers and groups just to come and perform. Imagine having a full week of big shows! That's what the art form is in need of right now. A personal dream of mine is to be able to hire a bunch of tap dancers and musicians for a like month, to create a big show. Hopefully we can get more people to come to STF and maybe we have to find corporations sponsoring the event, or somehow get some government funding."

Be sure to be there at the end of the month for what promises to be a great 7th edition of the Stockholm Tap Festival!
