In the space of a few years Avalon Rathgeb has quickly become one of the UK’s leading forces in Tap dance. Creating her company in September 2014, a glimpse of Old Kent Road’s ‘Fall out’ was first performed as part of Resolution! 2015.
Awarded Arts Council England funding in the summer 2016 Avalon was enabled to create and premiere Old Kent Road’s first full length 50 minute show which bringing together the UK's finest professional tap dancers, alongside jazz musicians.
After a run of sold out shows, critically acclaimed reviews ‘Fall Out’ was refined and enhanced for shows at The Tabernacle W11- London, OffBeat Festival- Oxford, DanceBase as part of Edinburgh Fringe Festival- Scotland, The Bunker Theatre- as part of InMotion Festival- London. In June 2017 Old Kent Road were invited to host a ‘Tap Jam’ at DanceEast- Ipswich UK.
Old Kent Road recently collaborated with master tap dancer Josh Hilberman to create video documentation of his honoured piece of choreography ‘Capella Josh’.
In 2017 Old Kent Road were commissioned by Theatre Bench to create a new show Dirty. Tap. Funk for InMotion Festival. Co-choreographed by Avalon Rathgeb and Ryan Campbell-Birch; Dirty. Tap. Funk also received Arts Council Funding.
Avalon’s current vision is for tap dance to be seen by people of all ages, backgrounds, genders and cultures. To see the positivity the form brings. To showcase our most proficient dancers in one show accomplishing something that they love. Her vision and hope for the company in the long term is to allow those young tap dancers to know there is work out there once they have finished their training. There is a an objective in there pursuit.
Avalon’s inspirations are those that have danced and have been heard before her.
